Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Lights.

217.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to install traffic lights at the intersections of the bridges and the quays in Dublin.

The provision of traffic light signals is a matter for the local authority acting at the request, or with the consent, of the Garda Commissioner.

Approval in principle was conveyed to Dublin Corporation on 4th March, 1969, to charging to their Road Fund grant allocation the cost of a linked traffic light installation covering the bridges from Watling Street to Capel Street. It is a matter for the corporation to make the necessary arrangements to provide the signals. I understand that the corporation are preparing plans for a traffic light installation at O'Connell Bridge.

I understand approval for these was given three years ago. Is it proposed to install traffic lights at the other bridges?

The only information I can give the Deputy is that the corporation sought approval from the Minister at the time to charging the cost of the traffic lights to their Road Fund grant allocation. Approval in principle to that proposal was conveyed in 1969.

The Minister might like to know that CIE are concerned about the fact that there are no traffic lights at intersections of bridges further up the Liffey because this is causing a hold-up in bus schedules, particularly in the case of the No. 23 bus which comes on to the quays and is held up for considerable periods due to lack of traffic lights. I would appreciate it if the Minister would look into the matter.

In the case of the lights referred to, I understand tenders have been received and the matter should not take too long.
