Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registration of Catering Establishments.

19.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider registration of restaurants and catering places to ensure that proper standards are maintained.

Provision for registration exists in the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950 to 1961, on the lines mentioned by the Deputy.

I have no doubt the Minister has seen the report in a British newspaper that, despite the fact that there were regulations in Britain, particular restaurants were not conforming to high standards. Did the Minister see that report? Would it not be time for us to consider more stringent regulations about hygiene in restaurants here?

Of course we have been examining the particular question of registering licensed premises in Dublin which do a limited amount of catering. We are looking into that at present.
