Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Budget.

25.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if any discussion has yet taken place on Ireland's contribution to the EEC Budget; and if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

No substantive discussion on this subject has yet taken place in our negotiations for EEC membership.

May I ask if discussions have taken place between Britain and the EEC countries on this matter?

The contribution and the period over which the contribution will be made?

What is the contribution?

I cannot say for certain the amount of the contribution, but it can be roughly calculated in a country entering into negotiation. By considering its trade and the nature of its trade one would have a fair idea of what contribution might be required of it if it were to pay the full amount required of members in the present situation of the Community members. It is the period over which this will be phased in which is at question.

In Britain they are concerned at the amount.

The Deputy can take it that one can calculate it roughly——

Has the Minister calculated it?

——and then one has to negotiate after that. We have made our calculation.

Would the Minister say what that is?

I will not.

It is so frightening?

Question No. 26.

It is in the White Paper.

I do not see why I should do all your reading for you. You sit there and get me to do all the work.

The Minister does not like his job. That is obvious.
