Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Rolling Stock.

38.

andDr. FitzGerald asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he will make a statement on the present position with respect to negotiations concerning the construction of rolling stock for CIE at Inchicore.

I am informed by CIE that negotiations are still proceeding between representatives of CIE and the CIE shopworkers' trade union group, to see how the shortage of skilled workers at Inchicore can be overcome.

Could the Minister explain why no attempt was made by CIE to forecast their manpower requirements, or why they did not take the necessary steps to recruit and train the necessary staff? Is he aware that there has been continual redundancy at Inchicore and at the Limerick wagon works since 1961 and in fact there are former CIE employees employed at present by a firm in Derbyshire——

This is a speech. Deputy.

This matter was raised by Deputy Donegan last night on the Adjournment and I answered it fully. The situation is that there were negotiations between the trade unions concerned and CIE as to what work should be done at Inchicore and I am glad to say that these negotiations are now reaching a fruitful conclusion and arangements will be then made by CIE with the successful tenderer to have done at Inchicore whatever subcontracting work can be done there.
