Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension.

51.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why an old age pension of only 5s has been assessed in the case of a person (name supplied).

In the calculation of her means the pensioner in question was assessed with a cash income of £286 a year, less the statutory deduction of £52 5s applicable to voluntary or gratuitous payments and also with the yearly value of a house which is owned and occupied by her. On this basis she was awarded a pension at the rate of 5s a week by decision of the local pension committee.

However, my Department is examining the case and a decision will be made as soon as possible.

This is another case in which someone has been assessed with very much more than she actually has.

The person in question has actually a weekly income.

Not a very big one.

Which, if and when we pay the pension, will be reduced.
