Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Estates.

86.

asked the Minister for Lands when he intends to allocate to the local applicants the following estates viz.: Greallys, Costellos, Con-Ions, Monaghans, Maloneys and Earlys all in the Ballyclogher, Balla area. County Mayo.

Possession of the Greally, Costello, Mullowney and Early estates has passed to the Land Commission. The formulation of resale proposals has been deferred pending completion of proceedings for the acquisition of the Monaghan estate, possession of which is expected shortly. When the Monaghan estate has been acquired a composite scheme of division of all the lands, aggregating 134 acres, will be prepared. From the particulars furnished it has not been found possible to identify the Conlon estate referred to in the question.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there are four slated houses on those estates, some of which were built by the Congested Districts Board and others built by public money? Those houses have been deteriorating during the past four or five years. Is the Parliamentary Secretary not aware that this is poor economics? In view of this, very soon nobody will go into those houses. What steps does he propose to take to have those vacant houses allocated to people who are entitled to them?

The Deputy will appreciate that the question refers to the allocation of land, including houses, but it did not make any specific reference lo the condition of those houses. I can assure the Deputy from the information available to me that it is intended to proceed with the division, as I indicated in the answer, at the earliest possible date. Arrangements will be made to start the division of this land as soon as possible.

The County Mayo Agricultural Committee had a discussion last week about the number of vacant houses which have been acquired by the Land Commission and not allocated. Those houses are falling asunder. I would suggest to the Parliamentary Secretary that when those houses are acquired they should be allocated within one year of acquisition to people who need them.

The Deputy's question relates to estates.

The Deputy will appreciate that it is the intention of the Land Commission in a scheme of division to implement a once-and-for-all scheme. This has not been possible up to this in this area. It now seems that it will be possible. If it is not possible the Land Commission intend to deal with it anyway.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the decision of the land court regarding the acquisition and division of the Dickens estate, Currane, Achill, County Mayo; and if he will state the reason why portion of this estate still remains undivided.

An order authorising resumption of a three acre holding on the Dickens estate has been made but the tenant has refused to give up possession. The Land Commission are considering the next step to be taken towards resolving the matter.
