In the case of all the university colleges marine zoology forms a part of the subject zoology for degree courses in science.
In addition marine studies have been an integral part of the degree courses in certain other departments in University College, Galway. As a further step in the expansion of marine studies in that college a Professorship in Oceanography has been instituted and a professor recently appointed. The college authorities have also formally decided to establish a School of Marine Science for the purpose of co-ordinating all the teaching and research programmes in the sphere of marine science which may be carried out in the departments of oceanography, zoology, botany, biochemistry, microbiology, geology and physics.
