Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Subsidy.

128.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount of money paid in milk subsidy by the State; and the amount paid in the five counties in Connacht.

The total amount for the State of the Exchequer milk subsidy was approximately £32.9 million in the year ended 31st August last, and the amount thereof relating to Connacht is estimated at around £2½ million.

The subsidy paid is about £32.9 million and the western counties get £2.3 million or £2.4 million. Surely we should get some assistance there in view of the fact that this money comes out of the pockets of the people of the country?

The Deputy must be aware that better facilities are available to farmers in the west than are available to people in the rest of the country. The same milk price support applies in Connacht as elsewhere.
