Vol. 253 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pensioners' Widows.

49.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is prepared to introduce a pension scheme whereby the widows of army pensioners will enjoy considerations similar to those extended to the widows of other State servants.

A contributory widows' and orphans' scheme, effective from the 23rd July, 1968 is in operation for the widows and orphans of officers of the Permanent Defence Force including retired officers who die while in receipt of retired pay. As non-commissioned officers and privates, discharged on pension, were insured during service under the Social Welfare Acts for contributory widows' pension purposes, it is not proposed to make provision for a further contributory pension scheme in their case.
