Vol. 254 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: Nos. 24, 25, 26 and 1. It is proposed to take Nos. 24 and 25 from 10.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and to take Nos. 26 and 1 after Questions until concluded. Questions at 3 p.m.

On the Order of Business, could I ask the Taoiseach what action he proposes to take in view of the statement made by Mr. Brian Faulkner last night, which would appear to give full licence to British privates serving in Northern Ireland to shoot to kill on what they assess to be suspicious behaviour?

This matter is not in order on the Order of Business.

We presumed that the Taoiseach would make a statement.

This order was made last night and at this moment there are British privates serving in Northern Ireland who are under the impression that they have full licence, given by the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, to shoot on what they, as private soldiers, regard as mere suspicious behaviour.

The matter cannot be discussed at this stage.

Is the Chair suggesting that it is a matter that is not of extreme national importance?

The Chair is suggesting that the matter is out of order at this stage. That is all.
