Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Leitrim Road Repairs.

7.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that his Department has about 18,000 acres of land under forestry in North Leitrim and is at present increasing that area by about 2,000 acres per year, he will initiate talks between Leitrim County Council and his Department regarding the provision of financial assistance for the repair of roads damaged by heavy forestry traffic in that area.

Instances of damage to public roads by vehicles of the forest and wildlife service of my Department are very rare. My Department have no liability for damage which may be caused to various roads by contractors entering or leaving State forest properties but if such damage were extraordinary liability would attach to the contractor. The improvement, repair and maintenance of public roads is the responsibility of the county council. The large State forest holding in the county is reflected in the very considerable sum paid to the local authority by way of bounty in lieu of rates for which virtually the only return is the road service.
