Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Hogget Ewes Subsidy Centres.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider bringing forward the dates fixed for holding subsidy centres in respect of hogget ewes to 1st July in order to facilitate owners who may wish to dispose of portion of their flocks.

If inspections under the Hogget Ewe Subsidy Scheme were held as early as 1st July one result could be that many hogget ewes subsidised for breeding would, in fact, be sold for slaughter——

On Question No. 19 I would ask the Minister that Sligo be made the centre for the wool market.

I would ask the Chair for a direction.

The Minister did not always ask for a direction. Even when he had information he did not give it. When the Taoiseach gave wrong information to the House the Minister had information and he refused to give it.

We are getting away from wool.

Yes, but it is an important principle.

This is sharp practice. Deputy McLaughlin asked a supplementary question and he was entitled to a reply.

May I point out that I did not start to answer Question No. 20 until the Chair told me to do so? As I understand the Rules of this House, the Chair directs business, not Deputy Harte or Deputy L'Estrange.

There is such a thing as collective responsibility. When the Taoiseach was misleading the House the Minister had information which he refused to give.

I am calling Question No. 20.

If inspections under the Hogget Ewe Subsidy Scheme were held as early as 1st July one result could be that many hogget ewes subsidised for breeding would in fact be sold for slaughter. I am however arranging that inspections this year will start about the third week in July, about one week earlier than was the case last year.
