Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Wexford Town Employment.

27.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the high unemployment in the Wexford town area; what the prospects are for the establishment of new industry in the area; and the number of new jobs expected to be provided there.

I am aware of the unemployment position in the area. The authority's first five-year regional industrial plans, expected to be issued before the end of this year, will contain industrial development proposals and job prospects for the south-east region, which includes County Wexford. The first instalment of advance factories for which provision will be made in the plans is contained in the authority's interim advance factory programme concerning which an announcement has just been made by the authority. The programme provides for the construction of four advance factories in the south-east region, one of which will be built in Wexford town.

Pending the publication of the regional industrial plans it is not possible to indicate the number of new jobs which might be expected for the Wexford town area.
