Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Mail Security Patrols.

39.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the circumstances under which valuable mail is carried by post office vehicles and contractors as disclosed in a recent mail robbery, he will take steps to provide adequate security patrols for such mail.

The extent of Garda protection to be provided in any particular case is a matter for determination by the Garda authorities and it would not be in the public interest to disclose it.

Does the Minister think it right that large sums of money should be carried in vans in the dead of night with only one person driving those vans? Does he not think this should be done in the daytime? Is the Minister further aware that as regards one robbery in Meath three years ago the people concerned have not been tried yet? The mother who went bail for her son has since died and nothing has been done about it.

The conveyance of mail is a matter for the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs.
