Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Water Schemes.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government the up-to-date position regarding Tourmakeady regional water supply scheme, County Mayo.

I understand that the county council hope to be in a position shortly to submit to my Department revised contract documents for the Tourmakeady water supply scheme.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government the up-to-date position regarding the provision of a water supply scheme for Shrule, County Mayo.

The local authority's application for a provisional order in connection with the taking of a supply of water for the purpose of the Shrule water supply scheme is under consideration. I will convey a decision in the matter as soon as practicable.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the provision of a water supply scheme at Borris-in-Ossory, County Laois.

I approved a tender for the civil works sections of this scheme on the 18th May. I understand that the treatment and pumping plant have been advertised for tender.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the group water supply scheme at Rahan, Tullamore, County Offaly.

This scheme has been approved by my Department and Offaly County Council. State grants have been allocated. The county council have already commenced work on the headworks and trunk mains. I understand that work will commence shortly on the distribution network which is being undertaken by the group.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position in relation to the proposed group water schemes at (a) Cordangan, (b) Coolaprevane, (c) Mohober, (d) Tankerstown and (e) Kilmoyler, County Tipperary.

No formal proposal has been received in my Department regarding a group water supply scheme at Cordangan.

The position concerning the other schemes referred to is that work on the scheme at Coolaprevane commenced in March, 1971. A grant of £900—15 houses at £60—has been allocated and an instalment of £660 will be paid shortly. A proposal by the county council to raise a loan of £1,350 to meet portion of the cost of the scheme is being considered in my Department.

The source originally selected for the scheme at Mohober proved unsatisfactory. Consequently the scheme was revised on the basis of a connection from the public mains. The group are considering the selection of an engineer to design the scheme and, in view of the relatively high cost of the work, they are seeking further participants.

The designs for the schemes at Tankerstown and Kilmoyler have been approved and the groups are at present seeking quotations for the necessary materials, etc. to enable firm costings to be determined and grants allocated, if in order.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any suitable source has yet been found for the Ballyclerihan group water scheme near Clonmel, County Tipperary; and if he considers St. Patrick's Well, the source of the proposed Marlfield/ Chancellorstown scheme, as being suitable.

The answer to the first part of the question is "no".

I am advised that a supply from the Marlfield group water supply scheme would not be technically possible.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state, in respect of the group water schemes of Tipperary South Riding County Council, the latest figures for (a) the capital debt involved and the annual cost of servicing it, (b) the State and local contributions, (c) the receipts from water charges and (d) the percentage of the population of the area with a piped water supply.

State grants for group water schemes are met from current revenue and not from capital, consequently there is no servicing cost. Information in regard to the capital debt in respect of local authority supplementary grants and contributions and the cost of servicing that debt is not available in my Department.

It is assumed that the second part of the question refers to the total grants paid in respect of group water schemes in South Tipperary. In 1970-71 State grants totalling £20,700 were paid. Again, information is not available in my Department as to the amount of supplementary grants and contributions paid by Tipperary (SR) County Council.

The information sought in the third part of the question is not available in my Department at present. The information requested in the fourth part of the question should become available when the results of the recent census of population are published.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress has been made in augmenting the Galtee regional water scheme by harnessing the source at Springmount Castle, Cashel, County Tipperary, the estimated cost of which is over £13,000.

Tenders for this scheme are I understand at present under examination by the local authority.

54.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the group water supply scheme at Rathmoyley, Killenaule, County Tipperary.

The design for this scheme has been submitted to the Tipperary (SR) County Council for approval. When this is received the group will be advised to seek quotations for the necessary materials, etc., so that firm costings may be determined.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress has been made in the construction of the water trunk main from New Birmingham to Gortnahoe, County Tipperary for which a loan of £20,000 has been sanctioned.

Work commenced on this scheme recently and is, I understand, progressing satisfactorily.
