Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - RTE Reception in Britain.

89.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to have broadcasts from Radio Éireann made available to listeners in areas of Great Britain where there is a large population of Irish descent.

Good reception of Irish sound programmes in Britain is rendered difficult by interference caused by foreign stations broadcasting on wavelengths adjacent to ours. The present medium-wave transmitter at Athlone is due for renewal, and a scheme to replace it has been approved in principle. I am advised that the new transmitter will give significantly better reception in this country and in Britain.

Can the Minister say whether it will be possible to receive programmes from this station all over Britain when this new transmitter is erected?

I should certainly hope so.

Is the Minister advised on that?

I am advised that reception in Britain will be greatly improved.
