Vol. 254 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Agreement Review.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has yet requested the British Government for specific reviews of provisions of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement which have to be made before 1st July when the year of review will end; and if requests made before 1st July can be finally negotiated after that date.

As provided for in Article 1 (5) of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement a review has been conducted to determine whether any difficulties had been caused or were threatened for Irish industry by the operation of the agreement. Consultations with the British Government have been commenced as provided for in that article. These consultations have not concluded. Interim action to be taken on 1st July, 1971, has been proposed in respect of a number of products and it is hoped to make an announcement about these within a few days. The consultations about these and other products can and will continue after 1st July, 1971.
