The numbers of persons receiving social welfare benefits, excluding treatment benefits, on 1st July, 1970, and on 1st July, 1971, or nearest date for which the information is available, were 713,536 and 714,463, respectively. The figures include approximately 337,000 and 343,000 heads of households receiving children's allowances.
