Vol. 255 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Collection.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the sheriff is being sent out to collect income tax which is still the subject of inquiry with the Revenue Commissioners; and if steps will be taken to ensure that this practice ceases.

I am not aware that the sheriff is being sent to collect income tax which is under inquiry. If there is a particular case which the Deputy has in mind, I shall be glad to look into it, if he will give me the details.

(Cavan): Is the Minister aware that the demands for income tax seem to be referred to the sheriff or county registrar now as a matter of form almost immediately after the demand is sent out and certainly within the currency of the six months moiety? They are sent out during the six months when the first moiety is due.

I am not aware that demands are sent out as a matter of form. I am aware of cases in which these demands have been sent to the sheriff for collection after a number of applications.

(Cavan): The Minister, if he examines the question, will find that such demands are sent out after one or two ordinary demands have been sent. They are issued from a machine without any personal letter or threat. Is the Minister aware that the personal touch seems to have left the collection of income tax? The demands are issued by the machine.

I would point out that the question relates to the sheriff being asked to collect income tax which is still the subject of inquiry.
