Vol. 255 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grain Prices.

52.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the common target prices and intervention prices for wheat and barley in the EEC in 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72; the prices proposed by the EEC Commission for 1972-73; what intervention prices would be applicable in Ireland for these products in 1972-73 on the basis of the Commission's proposals and allowing for the costs of transport etc.; and how these prices compare with the present guaranteed prices in this country for grain of a comparable standard.

As the answer is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Note: These prices are applied to wheat and barley at a moisture content of 16 per cent and a specific gravity of 75 kilograms per hectolitre in the case of wheat and 67 kilograms per hectolitre in the case of barley.

The levels of intervention prices which would be applicable to wheat and barely in this country, in the event of accession to EEC, have not yet been fixed. The matter is at present under consideration.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the average prices received by farmers in each of the EEC countries for wheat and barley of the standard to which the EEC basic price structure relates in the years 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72 to date.

As the answer is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Note: These are not official prices. They have been extracted from Trade Journals published monthly by EEC. They are not directly comparable as some are inclusive of transport costs to the various marketing centres while others do not include a charge for transport. The quality standards vary from country to country, in so far as they may be higher than the minimum standards fixed by the Commission.
