Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - British Army Intrusions.

168.

asked the Minister for Defence what official instructions have been given to the Army for dealing with intrusions by the British army in the Twenty-six Counties.

The action to be taken by members of the Defence Forces when on duty in aid of the civil power must depend on the circumstances of each particular case.

Can the Minister say whether the Army are free to act as circumstances arise, or whether they have to clear whatever line of action they take, and whether their instructions and movements are subject to a certain amount of control by the Garda?

The military will act in a manner appropriate to the circumstances of the particular case.

They acted very responsibly on at least one occasion.
