Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Mayo Housing.

207.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the anxiety of people in Foxford, County Mayo, because of the long delay in having houses provided for local people; and what proposals are in hand to remedy the situation.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his Question No. 43 of 4th March, 1971. I have continued to press the county council for action in the provision of houses at Foxford. I understand that title difficulties have caused delay in completing their negotiations for the acquisition of land, and that it is hoped to finalise these negotiations shortly.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious housing shortage in many Mayo towns; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 104 of 4th February, 1971, on the subject. Since then I have approved Mayo County Council's proposal to accept a tender for six houses in Claremorris and 11 houses in Belmullet. I understand that plans are being prepared by them for the development of a five acre site at Claremorris for sites for private dwellings and that they hope to finalise the acquisition of a site for local authority housing at Foxford shortly. On 30th September, 1971, the county council had work in progress on 85 dwellings, had 70 at tender stage, and had acquired or were acquiring sites for 118 dwellings.

As regards the urban areas, a scheme of 22 houses is in progress in Ballina and should be completed within the current financial year; sites for 86 further houses are available and the council intend to develop a site of about 17 acres for sites for private housing. In Westport, the 24 house scheme on which work is in progress should be completed by the end of March next; plans are being prepared for a further 12 houses and a proposal to accept a tender for the development of about 50 sites for private housing has been approved by me. In Castlebar plans are being prepared for a scheme of 24 local authority houses and 29 private sites and the urban district council have acquired sites for an additional 300 houses.
