Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Galway Housing.

227.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of applications received by Galway County Council for (a) specific instance houses and (b) small farmers' houses since 30th September, 1970; and what progress has been made in dealing with them.

I am informed by Galway County Council that a total of 92 such applications have been received by them; that all are in the category of specific instance applicants; that 32 applicants have withdrawn or have been informed by the council that they are ineligible for rehousing by them; that essential repair grants have been given in two cases; that two applicants have been rehoused in existing cottages and that one is being considered for the tenancy of a vacant cottage; that sites are being acquired in 12 cases; that pre-fabricated dwellings have been ordered for six applicants and that the remaining cases are still under investigation by the council.

As regards progress generally in the county in the provision of rural cottages, a joint examination is being made by the county council and my Department as a matter of urgency to decide on ways and means of speeding up the provision of urgently needed cottages.
