268.

269.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the Little Brosna river, near Roscrea, is polluted; and, if he proposes to take any action to remedy the position.

270.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the Tullamore river at Tullamore, is polluted; and, if he proposes to take any action to remedy the position.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 268, 269 and 270 together.

Some time ago I asked the local authorities concerned for reports on the subject of pollution in the rivers referred to. Preliminary information received from them indicates that local investigations to establish the sources of the pollution are in progress. I should like to add that the first stage of the continuing survey of major rivers being carried out by the water resources division of An Foras Forbartha is now nearing completion; it includes these three rivers and the results will be of considerable assistance to the local authorities in their efforts to establish sources of serious pollution and to consider remedial action.
