asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce measures to curtail the importation of motor and bicycle tyres, having regard to the recession in employment by Irish tyre manufacturers producing for the home market.
I would refer the Deputy to a statement made by the Irish Dunlop Company when announcing redundancy in that firm, as reported in the Press on 23rd August, 1971, that "because of factors outside their control they had to cut back on their export programme". The firm have made representations to me about their difficulties and I am considering the matter with a view to finding a satisfactory solution.
I should, perhaps, add that tyres on the home market are already afforded a considerable degree of protection.
Motor tyres are subject to a duty of 45 per cent or £3 per tyre full rate and 29 per cent or £0.25 for tyres of UK origin. Cycle tyres are subject to a duty of 60 per cent full rate, 29 per cent UK rate and 12 per cent Northern Ireland rate, and in some cases are also subject to quota.
