Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thefts of Gelignite.

146.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of raids carried out in the past five years in which gelignite was stolen; (b) the amount stolen on each occasion; (c) the date of each raid; (d) the number of people arrested in connection with such raids and the sentences passed on those convicted; and if the Government are now satisfied with the security regulations in force to prevent gelignite falling into unlawful hands.

The information sought at (a), (c) and (d) of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report. The statement does not include details of the amount of explosives stolen because I consider that this would only tend to reveal information regarding the disposition of stocks.

Special and detailed measures have been taken to tighten the controls on the storage and use of explosives and have indeed been further strengthened where experience showed this to be necessary. These measures are, moreover, under continuous review. The Garda authorities believe that the arrangements now in operation do everything that is required but further changes will be made if the situation so warrants.

The number of raids was nine.
