Vol. 256 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Lairage Facilities.

29.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will take steps to ensure that there will be permanent and sufficient lairage for livestock exports in the port of Waterford in view of this country's pending entry into the EEC; and if he will make a statement in this matter.

The provision of cattle lairage facilities at the port of Waterford is the responsibility of the Waterford Harbour Commissioners and/or the commercial interests concerned. The commissioners, in compliance with their statutory responsibilities in the matter, are prepared to consider proposals in regard to the provision of such facilities. Earlier this year the commissioners provided facilities for a particular cattle shipper to construct cattle pens at the port. These have already been provided but I understand that the export of cattle through the port has not yet recommenced.
