asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each year since 1960 (a) the total number of Civil Servants in the country, (b) their cost to the State and (c) the salary of the highest paid Civil Servant.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in a statement which, with the permission of the Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The figures relating to numbers and cost are taken from the Civil Service Census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year.

The figures in the final column show the highest rate of salary payable in a calendar year if an adjustment took place within the year.

asked the Minister for Finance the total cost of the recent salary increases granted to Civil Servants; and (a) the maximum and (b) the minimum sum awarded.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in a statement which, with the permission of the Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. Following is the statement:

1. Estimated cost of giving effect to the recently published findings of the Civil Service Arbitration Board on six claims for increased pay:

(a) £1,273,000 in 1971-72 (including arrears)

(b) £1,025,000 per year.

2. Maximum sum awarded:

£469 at the 9th point on the scale for the Superintendent of Revision and Publications in the Ordnance Survey Office; the scale was reduced by seven increments.

3. Minimum annual sum awarded: £31 at the minimum of the scale for Clerical Assistants.
