Vol. 256 No. 9

Written Answers. - Offences Against the State Act.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice what statutory rules and orders made under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 and the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act, 1940 have not been rescinded.

I refer the Deputy to the answer to Question No. 47.

60.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of South African citizens at present resident in this State; if inquiries have been made as to whether any such persons are or have been engaged in or connected with intelligence or political activities in support of apartheid; if he has seen reports of activities by the South African intelligence service in Dublin; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

The official records in relation to aliens in this country do not include citizens of South Africa, who, in common with citizens of some other countries, are, in accordance with statutory instruments made under the Aliens Act, 1935, exempted from the requirement that aliens resident here must register with the Garda.

In referring to inquiries, I assume the Deputy has in mind the possibility that inquiries might have been made by the Garda following on the newspaper reports to which he refers. If such inquiries were made, they would, of course, be confidential. I have, in any case, no statement to make in relation to the reports.
