Vol. 258 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Choice of Doctor Scheme.

10.

asked the Minister for Health when choice of doctor will be provided in each health authority region; when dispensary districts will be abolished; and when the proposed local health committees will be set up.

It is intended that the choice of doctor scheme will be introduced in the Eastern Health Board area on 1st April next and in the other health board areas on 1st October next. The abolition of the dispensary system will coincide with the introduction of the choice of doctor scheme in the respective areas. I expect that the necessary regulations to establish the local health committees will be made next week.

Can the Minister give us an assurance that there will be no hitch in the introduction of the choice of doctor scheme in the Eastern Health Board area? In view of the fact that there is a delay in regard to the terms of the contract the doctors will not make a final decision in time and there is a great danger that it will not be introduced on 1st April.

I will not give the Deputy any such assurance. I hope and anticipate that there will be no hitch but I will not give a guarantee on that. I hope that everything will be worked out with regard to this matter.
