Vol. 258 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Prices.

89.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the sharp rise in the price of land, the Land Commission can be effective in securing further estates.

I am aware of the rising trend in land prices and this must be a source of unease for an organisation concerned with the acquisition of land for land settlement purposes. Yet, the law passed by this House provides that the Land Commission must pay a sum equal to the market value for lands acquired by them. The factual position is that, at 31st December, 1971, proceedings for acquisition of some 75,000 acres were in progress and this is considered a reasonable level of activity.

90.

asked the Minister for Lands the average price per acre offered by the Forestry Division for land for afforestation.

The average price per plantable acre in respect of lands for which price agreement was reached in the year ended 31st December, 1971, was £14.9.
