Vol. 259 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Student Charter Flights.

18.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he proposes to make new regulations governing student charter flights; and, if so, if he will give details.

No revision of the conditions for the operation of student charter flights is proposed at present.

Only one body, the Union of Students of Ireland Travel (USIT), is being authorised for the operation of student charter flights this year. The other body authorised last year, the Irish Student Educational and Travel Association (ISETA), failed to produce the necessary evidence of sponsorship by recognised institutions of third level education and student associations.

Mr. O'Donnell

Is the Minister aware that at the moment a number of student travel organisations are active in the universities? There are two others, ISETA and ISEC, canvassing for business at the moment. I am referring now to the trouble we had last year.

The Deputy is aware that it was my concern, and the concern of the Deputy as well, that the uncertainty that existed last year should be eliminated this year so we set a deadline of 1st December, 1971, by which any student organisation should submit evidence of its sponsorship to establish its credibility and the only one that fulfilled the requirement was USIT.
