27.

asked the Minister for Local Government the average rate adopted by local authorities for the years 1965-66 and 1971-72.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 25, 26 and 27 together. The averages of the rates levied for all purposes in 1965-66 and 1971-72 were 58s 2d and 535 new pence in the £ respectively. The averages of the rates levied for roads in 1964-65 and 1971-72 were 7s 9d and 73 new pence in the £ respectively and the averages of the rates levied for health in 1954-55, 1964-65 and 1971-72 were 5s 9d, 19s 6d and 200 new pence in the £ respectively.

Is it forecast that, as the years go on, the increases will be as pronounced?

There will be increases but we will have similar increases on the other side. In 1954-55 the State contributed £20 million to local expenditure. The figure last year was £90.5 million.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary realise that there has been an increase of almost 800 per cent in expenditure on health services?

Yes. There are very big increases under all headings.
