Vol. 259 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Act Legislation.

30.

asked the Minister for Education if he will include the Beechill area, Donnybrook, Dublin 14 in the Dublin County Borough for the purposes of the School Attendance Acts in view of the request of the Donnybrook Social Service Council.

Dublin Corporation School Attendance Committees employ school attendance officers to enforce the School Attendance Acts in the County Borough of Dublin. The Garda Síochána is the enforcing authority for County Dublin.

The Beechill area comprises a housing scheme completed for Dublin Corporation. However, the area was excluded from the extension provided for by the Local Government Provisional Order Confirmation Act, 1953. Accordingly, Beechill is still within the administrative jurisdiction of Dublin County Council.

I am, therefore, precluded statutorily from transferring the administration of the School Attendance Acts from the Garda to the Dublin Corporation School Attendance Committees unless and until the area in question is included within the administrative jurisdiction of Dublin Corporation.
