Vol. 259 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Parking Meters.

49.

andDr. FitzGerald asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the strong local objection to car parking metering at Fitzwilliam Square, Merrion Square and neighbouring areas in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that there are objections from local interests to the proposed extension by Dublin Corporation of parking meter controls to the Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square areas. The decision to extend the parking meter scheme is a function of the corporation in conjunction with the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. I understand that a deputation on behalf of residents and commercial interests in the Fitzwilliam Square area has recently been received by the corporation. I am further informed that control of parking by meters will be applied to limited portions only of road space at Fitzwilliam and Merrion Squares and that considerable space will still be available for other parking.
