asked the Minister for Local Government the annual returns since 1966-67 of (a) local authority collection on motor vehicles (taxation, fines, et cetera); (b) the amount paid to the exchequer from local authority motor vehicle collections under the 25 per cent levy operative under the Finance Act, 1966 and the Finance (No. 2) Act, 1970; (c) the amount allocated to local authorities for road maintenance and repair; (d) the expenses deducted in respect of the road funds; (e) the allocation to local authorities for road purposes as a percentage of the total local authority collections on motor vehicles; and (f) the expenses in respect of road funds expressed as a percentage of the contribution to local authorities for roads.

(1) Column (a) includes, in addition to motor vehicle and driving licence duties, receipts from fines collected by the Department of Justice, fees re ceived under the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations 1963 to 1970, fees collected by planning authorities in respect of appliances and structu res for servicing vehicles, fees received by the Department of Local Government pursuant to the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1964 and sums received from Government Departments in lieu of road tax on state-owned vehicles.
(2) The bank closure in 1970 had the effect of reducing the figures in column (b) for 1969-70 and correspondingly increasing those for 1970-71.
(3) The sums for administrative expenses given in column (d) comprise the expenses of local authorities in the collection of road tax, the expenses of the Road Sections of the Department of Local Government, Garda Síochána expenses in the administration of the Road Traffic and other Acts, R oad Safety expenses and payments to An Foras Forbartha in connection with their Roads and Road Traffic research programmes.
(4) The amounts shown in column (c) relate to road maintenance and repair only as requested at (c) in the Deputy's Question. They do not include amo nts allocated for Improvement Works, Bridges, etc.
