Vol. 259 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Report on CIE.

14.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the present position regarding the McKinsey Report on CIE; and when he will be in a position to announce the Government's intentions regarding the implications of this report for CIE and for the Irish transport industry.

Consultation with interests concerned in regard to the McKinsey Report on CIE is still in progress. When this consultation has been completed, the recommendations in the report will be considered by the Government.

I am unable to say at this stage when I will be in a position to announce the Government's decisions on the report, but I can assure the Deputy that there will be no undue delay in the matter.

Mr. O'Donnell

Can the Minister state if there will be an opportunity for a full debate on the matter?

Yes, because there are legislative changes involved in any decisions we make on foot of the report.

Mr. O'Donnell

It may necessitate new legislation?

Could the Minister say if representatives of the private sector of the transport industry have been invited to participate in these discussions on the implications of the report?

I have sent out a global invitation to everyone who wants to discuss the matter. So far the trade unions have been the only people who have offered to come and I shall meet a deputation from the unions shortly.

Can the Minister state if invitations have been sent to associations of private bus operators on this matter?

They are very welcome to come if they wish.
