Vol. 259 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Workers.

16.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons declared redundant for January and February, 1971 and 1972, under the Redundancy Payments Act.

The numbers of redundancies notified to my Department during January and February, 1971, were 381 and 727, respectively. The numbers of redundancies notified during January and February, 1972, were 1,200 and 702, respectively.

These figures are not directly comparable, however, because of the reduction in the qualifying period for redundancy payments from four to two years, under the Redundancy Payments Act, 1971, which became effective as from 1st September, 1971, and the raising of the limit for compulsory insurance from £1,200 to £1,600 per annum with effect from 3rd May, 1971.
