Vol. 259 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Teacher.

23.

asked the Minister for Education why his Department is refusing to pay a secondary teacher (name supplied) who has been employed at Hamilton High School, Bandon, County Cork for the past seven months.

The teacher in question cannot be paid incremental salary because the registration council, which is a statutory body on which I am represented by only two out of the total of 18 members, has by majority decision refused to register him as a secondary teacher on the qualifications which he holds.

I accept what the Minister said but would the Minister not agree that this man has been several months in this country working under the impression that his qualifications were acceptable? Would he not also agree that this man gave up a job in England and that his wife gave up a job teaching in England and that he sold his house in England and that he now finds he is not eligible to receive the salary he expected? Surely the Minister must do something about this?

I do not propose to comment on the merits of the case but it is proposed that my representatives will raise the matter again with the registration council.
