Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South African Trial.

5.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether in the recent trial of a South African clergyman evidence was given derived from reports by South African spies in Ireland; whether he will place a transcript of this evidence in the Dáil Library; whether he has since made representations to the South African Government on this matter; and whether, if these spies entered this country through Great Britain, he has made any representations to the UK Government.

I am not aware that any such evidence was given in the trial in question. The other matters mentioned by the Deputy do not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister aware this was widely reported in the Press and has he any reason to doubt the Press reports?

The Deputy did not say what was reported in the Press.

That evidence was given at the trial in question by South African spies in Ireland.

I understand a witness said she had been told by the accused that he had been shown certain photographs when he was in prison, but I understand also these were not produced as evidence at the trial. That is the information I got on inquiry.
