Vol. 260 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Land Congestion.

45.

asked the Minister for Lands the Land Commission's plans for the relief of congestion in the vicinity of the Smith estate at Decoy, Garlowcross, Navan, County Meath.

The congestion in the vicinity of the Smith estate was investigated and all local deserving smallholders were provided with allotments, aggregating 132 acres, to bring their holdings up to current standard.

Is the Minister satisfied there are not at least two applicants within policy distance of this estate with less than the acreage to which it is the policy of the Land Commission to raise smallholders and would he not agree that, in those circumstances, it was injudicious to adopt a policy of migration, a policy, the Minister himself said in this House, had outlived its usefulness?

The information I have is that all the deserving smallholders in the area were provided for and, in those circumstances, migration was allowed.

I would ask the Minister to investigate this matter personally to satisfy himself. I would be grateful if he would do so.
