Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Inspectorate.

16.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of factory inspectors at present attached to his Department; the total number operating in the Dublin area; and if he is satisfied that the number is sufficient.

The present total strength of the industrial inspectorate is 34. Thirty of these are headquartered in Dublin. The work of the Dublin area is shared between them but their duties extend, as well, over most of the country.

Efforts are continually being made to build up the strength of the inspectorate so that it can cope with the increasing demands. Four more inspectors are just due for appointment and further competitions will be held as necessary.

Will the Minister answer that part of the question as to whether he is satisfied that the number is sufficient?

No. We are below strength but four are about to be added.

How many below stength?

With the incoming four we will still be six or seven below strength.

How many of these inspectors are women?

Is there a distinction?

I could not say off-hand but I would say three or four. We have to employ suitably qualified persons and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get people with the necessary qualifications. These industrial inspectors now require certain qualifications which were not required in years gone by.

Can women apply as readily as men?
