Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Young Persons on Remand.

34.

asked the Minister for Education the provisions made for holding young persons on remand who are unsuitable for Saint Laurence's Institution, Dublin and who are under the age of 15 years.

35.

asked the Minister for Education the number of young persons held on remand since 22nd May; and where they have been held.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 34 and 35 together.

An additional building to house the remand and assessment centre is at present under construction at St. Laurence's and will be available in the autumn.

I am satisfied that in the meantime suitable arrangements can be made to take all boys sent on remand to St. Laurence's in the preventive school.

Since 22nd May, 1972, a total of 32 boys have been remanded to St. Laurence School, Finglas.

Do I understand that they are remanded to St. Laurence School?

There may be a very small number for a very short period elsewhere.

In Marlborough House, possibly. Last week there were only two.

My question asked where they are held on remand since 22nd May. Has the Parliamentary Secretary not got that information?

I thought the Deputy gave information to that effect in the House. He will appreciate that it varies from day to day in Marlborough House. The number there at present, if there are any at all, is so limited that it changes from day to day and from hour to hour.

Are any of them held on remand in Mountjoy?

Not that I am aware of.
