Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House Loan Fees.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to a statement (details supplied) by the Construction Industry Federation to the effect that exorbitant fees are being charged by certain insurance brokers in connection with the giving of house loans; if his Department have had any individual complaints regarding this matter; and if he will undertake an investigation into the allegations.

I have noted the statement. I have had no complaints regarding this matter and I do not propose to undertake an investigation. I understand that the Construction Industry Federation and the Corporation of Insurance Brokers of Ireland are jointly examining the allegations.

Is the Minister aware that it was the Construction Industry Federation which made the allegations?

If the Deputy is referring to Press reports, yes, but there was no complaint made to my Department on, say, coalition and I cannot have my Department run by the Press, unlike the Coalition.

At long last a Member of the Government has mentioned the word. Does the Minister not think it advisable for him to contact the Construction Industry Federation?

No. I think the matter is being properly handled.

They have the same experience as other people —they get no satisfaction from the Department of Industry and Commerce.

The remaining Questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
