Vol. 262 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Operations.

24.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if his attention has been drawn to a statement made by the general secretary of the National Association of Transport Employees calling for an investigation into the workings of CIE and expressing criticism of the McKinsey Report recommendations; if he will consider holding such an investigation; and, if not, why.

I have seen press reports of statements made by the general secretary of the National Association of Transport Employees calling for an investigation into the workings of CIE and expressing criticism of the McKinsey Report.

I do not consider that any further investigation into the affairs of CIE at the present time is either necessary or desirable. The National Association of Transport Employees, in common with other interested trade unions, have already furnished observations to me on the McKinsey Report and these observations together with those of other interested parties will be fully considered before decisions are taken on the report.

Can the Minister state when a decision will be taken on the report?

Consultations have been undertaken. There will be further consultations because this is a far-reaching matter, as the Deputy will appreciate. I have had very detailed consultations already with the Transport Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and I propose to have further consultations with them.

May we take it that it will be buried?

No. Nothing is buried by good administration or good government.
