Vol. 262 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export Marketing Organisations.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will outline the action taken by him and the progress to date in the establishment of voluntary export marketing organisations for pork, bacon, mutton and lamb; and if he will indicate his future plans in this matter.

The voluntary organisation of the export marketing of meat on a national basis in the context of EEC membership is primarily a matter for the industries concerned which I have advised to give very full consideration to its value. I and my Department have had some discussions with the interests concerned, and the bacon and fresh meat trade organisations have established special committees to study the situation. The position will be further discussed when the trade organisations have concluded their studies.

When does the Minister expect to have another meeting with the interests concerned? Is he aware that this is a matter of great urgency in view of the fact that it is desirable that we have whatever arrangement we are going to have in operation before——

Question No. 41.

It is I who took the initiative in this particular matter by bringing the people in the trade together in the first instance to tell them precisely what the Deputy has said. Having said that the bacon trade and the fresh meat trade separately went their ways and formed sub-committees of their own to examine this question in depth. If either or both want to see me at any time I will meet them.

Would the Minister consider convening another meeting?

If it is desirable.

Question No. 41.
