Vol. 262 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Statistics.

30.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons assessed for income tax under each of the following classifications: (a) property owners and house holders, (b) occupiers of land, (c) persons and companies engaged in trades and professions and (d) wage and salary earners and pensioners; and the total amount collected under each classification last year.

Income tax statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable information in the exact form sought by the Deputy to be given. However, it is estimated that for the year 1970-71, the latest year for which statistics are available, there was a total of 637,000 persons effectively liable to income tax, including 7,000 companies. Of the estimated 630,000 individuals effectively liable to income tax, 585,000 were charged to tax under Schedule E which is the schedule under which wage and salary earners and pensioners are taxed and 45,000 paid tax under Schedule D which is the schedule under which the profits of trades and professions, rents and certain other incomes are charged to income tax. Since the abolition of Schedules A and B with effect from 1969-70, there is no charge to income tax on farming profits or owner-occupied property.

The net receipt of income tax in the year 1971-72 amounted to £148.5 million of which £99.1 million was charged under Schedule E and the balance of £49.4 million under other schedules.
