Vol. 262 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Handicapped Children.

50.

asked the Minister for Education his Department's policy in relation to the transport of mentally handicapped children in special classes in schools throughout the country and particularly in the Roscrea district, County Tipperary.

Transport to special classes for mildly mentally handicapped children is provided by passes on existing primary, post-primary or public services. Where a pupil is not able to avail of existing transport his case is considered by the Department with a view to ascertaining if special arrangements can be made.

51.

asked the Minister for Education if he will provide free school transport for children attending schools for the mentally handicapped in urban areas.

Transport services are sanctioned by the Department to all the special schools catering for mentally handicapped children at which day pupils are in attendance.

Each application is dealt with individually and the transport is provided by special services or by issuing passes for the normal service.

May I ask the Minister if this applies to urban areas?

Would the Minister have a look at the relationship between the health boards and the Department in the provision of such facilities because many parents seem to be very confused about their prospects of getting their children some urban transport to these schools?

I was referring in my reply to city areas.
