With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the information available. In order that the data for the different countries may be compared, official exchange rates were used to express the national income per head of population in each country in pounds sterling. Care must, however, be exercised in drawing inferences from these figures in regard to the level of welfare in the different countries since it is known that conversion of currencies at the official exchange rates is not in all cases a true reflection of the comparative purchasing power of currencies.
