Vol. 262 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Polyester Sheet Imports.

60.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will prohibit the importation of corrugated translucent polyester sheets as it is having an adverse affect on the industry in this country.

In view of the terms of the international agreements to which Ireland is a party—the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade—and in view of our proposed accession to the EEC, it would not be possible for me to prohibit the importation of corrugated polyester sheets.

These goods are already liable on importation to a customs duty. An Coimisiún Dumpála is at present investigating a complaint of dumping of corrugated polyester sheets. On the commission's recommendation, I have imposed a provisional additional duty of £0.065 per linear foot on the goods which are the subject of the complaint, pending the completion of the commission's investigation.
